About Us
What We Believe
& Who We Are
Our mission is to change the way athletes train and move to put an end to the largely preventable non-contact injuries in volleyball.
Oh and by changing the way athletes train and move we should also see athletes hitting the ball harder than ever before!
Just because you play volleyball doesn’t mean you have to play through the common shoulder, low back or knee pain that so many athletes fall victim to throughout their careers. Our evolution as a company began with working with athletes largely away from the court, rehabbing injuries and making their bodies more resilient so they didn’t have future breakdowns. But something interesting was happening, this process worked for many, but not all. Some athletes who came to us with shoulder pain would leave sessions without pain but a month, a few months, or the next season would come back to us with similar symptoms. Now their movement and capacity off the court was still improved from the last time we saw them, which lead to the realization that some issues were not solely off-court fixes but needed an on-court intervention.
This lead us to combine our movement science background with our on-court coaching and playing knowledge as we worked with these athletes. We started watching how they moved on the court and tried to figure out why their bodies were not distributing the stress and force well throughout their body. What we found overwhelmingly was youth volleyball players across North America had inefficient patterns as they spiked a volleyball. The majority were using patterns that clearly put higher stress on their shoulders, low backs and knees than necessary. So we started intervening on the court, working on their arm swing patterns and that’s where the magic happened.
Athletes who had shoulder, low back, and knee pain who weren’t finding the solution in their off-court rehab and training protocols almost instantly got out of pain! By changing the way athletes attacked a volleyball they were able to distribute force and stress more evenly throughout their body and it wasn’t getting “stuck” in any one part of the “chain”. What we found so commonly was athletes would put their bodies in positions where their shoulders or low backs were the engine that was used to create velocity. And when they did this, the stress and force that goes through the body as we attack stopped in these two places, wearing them down quickly. Now when we got them using their full body and rotation became the engine that was used to create velocity, they ended up evenly distributing this stress and force throughout their torso and their low backs and shoulders were almost instantly happier.
What about the knees? Well when athletes changed to using more rotation, they also started landing on two feet more often. Landing on 1-foot is inevitable in volleyball and we have to be really strong and good at it, but if we spike the volleyball in a way that puts us into a 2-foot landing position more often, I think we can all guess how the knees would feel better from that.
So we started having athletes playing full seasons pain-free sometimes for the first time in their long careers. And this may not even be the coolest part… As we worked on the arm swing on the court and paired it up with changing how they trained away from the court athletes started hitting the ball harder. We’ve had youth athletes add 30km in half a year of working with us. We’ve had high level university and National team athletes add 5-10km even later in their careers.
This is where we are at now, we work with athletes on and off the court, making them more efficient movers in both environments so they can hit harder with less pain!
Our Recipe
We approach the arm swing NOT JUST AS A TECHNICAL FIX, but one that may involve the Physical and Mental components of the skill. Through the three ingredients: Physical, Technical & Mental we are able to create changes with athletes who may have once been considered “unchangeable”. It allows us to determine exactly where they are stuck in the process of hitting harder with less pain and then work on the specific area that will create the most changes for them!
No two athletes are the same, one may need more work owning rotational patterns off the court, another may be an amazing mover off the court but has trouble putting it all together on the court.
About Our Coaches
Mischa Harris, Co-Founder
My journey in sport began at a young age, when I fell in love with the sport of volleyball and it became one of the main focuses of my life. Not long into that process however, I began to be riddled with injuries that years later would lead to an early retirement. I realized that what happened to me was also happening to athletes all around me - our bodies and minds were breaking down at an alarming rate!
The next phase of my life was dedicated to discovering the best strategies to recover from, and prevent future injuries and mental crashes. This fascinating path taught me an immense about myself, about movement, about psychology, and about what really creates a resilient athlete.
Now there’s nothing that puts a bigger smile on my face than helping athletes realize that they don’t need to accept injury, exhaustion, and anxiety as the status quo - there is such a better way!

Not too long ago I played volleyball at a varsity, professional and Canadian National Team level. In my varsity career I was named to the First Team All-Canadian 3 times and I was the Player of the Year in 2015. My team at Trinity Wester University also won 2 national golds and one national silver medal. After university I went on to play professional in Germany, France, Switzerland and India. In Switzerland I was part of the Swiss Championship winning team in 2018.
My journey was uncommon; I was able to continually surpass expectations and beliefs in what my limits were.
I believe this was largely due to Mischa’s inspiration in my career to be unique in my approach to how I approached training off the court. He guided me to develop a mindset where it wasn’t just about being bigger, faster, stronger. As important as those things are to an athletes development, what I found was when I trained to do those things IN COMBINATION WITH training to be more resilient to breakdowns my athleticism peaked and my ability to train on the court as hard as I could was sustainable.
You get better at volleyball by playing volleyball, and my off-court training held that belief tightly.
Now it is my mission to inspire other athletes to live their volleyball careers uncommonly. In the last 6+ years I’ve been working with athletes I’ve seen hundreds of athletes rehab faster, not fall victim to injuries that used to plague them, and reach new heights of performance on the court. This approach worked for me, it has worked for volleyball players I’ve worked with and it will work for you!

Similarly to Nick I played volleyball at a varsity, professional and Canadian National Team level. Throughout my career I was named to an All-Canadian Team, and won 2 OUA bronze medals with the University of Windsor. Throughout my university career I was named to 2 National teams to represent Team Canada at the Taiwan (2017) and Italy (2019) FISU Games. In 2019 I played my first and only professional season in the top league in Germany, as COVID-19 quickly ramped up my season was cut short and I returned to Canada.
Since my return to Canada I have been pursuing a career path to intelligently help youth athletes reach levels of sport they never thought was possible. I find great joy in cultivating an environment where athletes feel they can learn, try and fail in a safe space. By teaming up with AWA I hope to give athletes all the tools they need to live fulfilling lives, get better at sport and learn new ways to take care of their bodies.

I played volleyball for 10 years through school, club, Team Alberta, and college before becoming a coach. When I was playing, I genuinely thought injuries and chronic pain were just part of the package, inevitable. To be fair, I wasn't concerned with feeling good or my well-being, I was only really concerned about performance. As I went through school for Personal Training and became more informed about the body, it occured to me that a lot of my injuries and pain could have been reduced or avoided altogether. Then I spent years working with non-athletes and I really got to dial in on what makes peoples' bodies happy and healthy and just plain feel good. Becoming a Sports Performance Specialist, I knew I wanted to bring these worlds together: athletic performance and making bodies feel good.
AWA was just a perfect fit for me. It's not just about jumping higher and moving faster and hitting harder, although those are absolutely a priority. It's also about building resilience, keeping athletes healthy, reducing pain, and increasing their potential and longevity. Lucky for us, these things go hand in hand when done right. We help athletes move better to improve on-court performance as well as how they feel off the court, in their every day life, in their hobbies, and after they're done playing. It's been amazing marrying my two loves: high level volleyball and helping people have happier, healthier bodies!
