1-on-1 Coaching

Decreasing Pain, Increasing Performance.

About Me

I am a former Professional and Canadian National Team volleyball player. In my varsity career I was named to the First Team All-Canadian 3 times and I was the Player of the Year in 2015. My team at Trinity Wester University also won 2 national golds and one national silver medal. After university I went on to play professionally in Germany, France, Switzerland and India.

I think the best way to describe me as a coach is by understanding the influential coaches I have/have had in my own career.

Off-the-court I worked with Mischa Harris, the other co-founder of AWA. He introduced me to a unique approach to athletic performance that wasn’t just about getting bigger, faster, stronger. We focused on improving movement quality as the foundation for more resiliency and higher performance. I had a very successful career and was relatively pain free throughout 99% of it and I owe much of this to the work I did with Mischa.

On-the-court I was fortunate enough to be coached for 6-years by Ben Josephson. Obviously I learned how to be a cool volleyball player from him, but my learnings from him extend well beyond the volleyball court. I owe much of the curiosity and creativity that drives me in my own coaching practice to Ben.

Since retiring from the sport in 2018, I’ve been on a knowledge seeking hunt to find ways to effectively impact athletes movement to decrease pain and improve performance. This was a big piece of the puzzle that allowed me to be relatively pain free my whole career. My search eventually lead me to Austin Einhorn of Apiros who I’ve now been mentoring under for nearly 3-years. His approach to the human body is revolutionary and since adopting it I’ve been able to create changes in athletes who were stuck with pain or performance limitations for years.

The skills I’ve picked up from these three all show up in different ways in how I will approach you, your goals, and your body. I’m truly passionate about helping athletes become more resilient to injury so they can continue to better their craft. I work with athletes that are ready for a change, tired of the status quo and want to become uncommon! If this sounds like you, continue reading down the page.

How It Works

Most athletes come to me because they haven’t been able to get the results they’re looking for. Whether they’re working towards playing pain-free, recovering from an injury, or improving their performance, they feel stuck. Most of these athletes have tried lots of different things to achieve their goals in the past, yet they’re still in pain and they are still not seeing the results they desire in their sport. They are near the end of their rope and ready to accept that this just may be “the way it is”. If this sounds like your story, you’re in the right place.

When athletes come to me in this place described above I get really excited because I truly believe, together we will be able to change their story and their careers trajectory. How can I say this so confidently, because I have a process that has been tested and proven working with hundreds of athletes.

The Process

  • This may be the simplest step yet something that seems to be missing from the coaching assessment, I find out what they’ve already done. The simple question of “what have you already done” unlocks golden nuggets, it gives me insights to what has and has not worked. Athletes are coming to see me because what they’ve been doing hasn’t delivered the results they’re looking for, so I don’t want to waste their time doing more of the same!

  • Next I assess their movement by looking at how efficiently they move as well as their capacity to sustain efficient movement patterns. This assessment looks at their movements both in a weight room setting as well as how they move in their sport. By looking at both environments I’m often able to see things that have previously been overlooked or have been left untouched. This, coupled with step 1 allows me to start making decisions on where to get started.

  • Pretty simply I now want to get the athlete working and see what delivers changes. Step 1 and 2 have created a list of things to work on, now we go down the list and see what is the most effective for the athlete in front of me. If something that I believe should work, I’m not going to let me ego get in the way of my athletes progress, but I will go back to the drawing board and see what we’ve missed.

Bodies are extremely adaptable, so if we are not seeing positive changes relatively fast (in session or within 2-weeks) we are generally going to move on to the next item. This doesn’t mean people are magically healed in a session or a couple of weeks (sometimes they are), but we should be able to tell if things are moving in the right direction in a short time frame.

I expect to see positive results within a couple weeks if we are doing the right things, even with the most stubborn tendons which take longer to adapt than muscles.

  • Once we find the things that work for the individual, we dive deep into making movement cost less. Every time we move we take out money from our “bodies bank”. If our bodies bank account has $1000 in it, we want to make each movement cost only a few cents so that the account drains slowly. If the account nears or reaches zero, overuse or non-contact injuries, or performance decreases tend to happen.

We are not chasing “perfect” movement, but we are chasing more efficient movements that cost less!

  • Now we don’t just make movement cost less, if this were the case our bank account would always be slowly draining and therefore eventually run out. We simultaneously work on developing greater capacities so athletes can withstand more stress, load, volume and intensity without breaking down.

Training the capacity is like making deposits into the “body’s bank account”. An athlete may go from $1000 to $10,000 and so on, moving them further away from bankruptcy (injuries, poor performance, etc.).
**Thank you Austin Einhorn for this metaphor!**

  • Lastly, I bridge the worlds of “strength training” and “sport coaching” to allow an athletes newly developed efficient patterns in the weight room, show up on the court or field.

I don’t care if an athlete is the strongest or the best mover in the weight room if they’re not seeing the results they want to see as they play their sport!

Playing time, health, stats, performance metrics or other measurables should improve with the work we do in the weight room. And it’s not something we leave up to chance, we check in on these things and make sure the gap between the weight room and their sport is bridged!

Movement Coaching Options

VIRTUAL
The Uncommon Training Membership

It’s called the Uncommon Training Membership because I want athletes who are part of it to strive for and get uncommon results. This membership is designed to be the most efficient (from a distance) way to progress athletes towards their goals and beyond. It is geared towards university and professional level athletes who are looking to commit to a process that will continually push them away from pain and injuries, and towards higher performance in their sport.

The small group of athletes in this group will be my main priority.

As a part of this membership, athletes will have access to up to 90-minutes of call time/month (phone or zoom). This allows me to make sure athletes are learning the patterns, progressing in an efficient manner and if something comes up mid-month we can connect and problem solve!

Athletes will also have a shared photo album where they can quickly upload their workout and sport videos for analysis and feedback. I want to make the experience as similar to in-person as possible so we utilize these videos to ensure exercises are done well, progress is being made, and sport performance is improving (if that’s part of your goals).

These videos also help me adapt exercises and programming in real-time, as the athlete adapts. If we see a change in movement happening, I want to progress things in order to see your results improve quickly!

Lastly, members will have my phone number so they can access me throughout the month for questions an support. There is limited space so apply using the button below and I’ll be in touch shortly!

FAQ

  • I am keeping numbers low (~10) so I can FULLY commit to the athletes within the group. If you apply and things are full I will put you on a waitlist and contact you when a spot opens.

  • The Uncommon Training Membership is $400/month. There is no 3 month or yearly contract you must agree to. I expect the results to make you want to stick around.

  • I designed this Membership with Professional, National Team and University athletes in mind but in rare cases some youth athletes are permitted into the group.

More important than the level you play at in your sport, I’m looking for athletes that are ready for change and genuinely curious in nature.

  • Most of the Uncommon Training Membership athletes work with me year round. Training looks different in the off-season than it does in-season, I understand that. I also understand what it’s like to have a team training program that you have to complete.

I will help you navigate the uniqueness of your situation and make adjustments quickly to ensure you’re doing the right things whether you are in-season or in the off-season.

  • I work with some athletes who are not in the Uncommon Subscription on a case by case situation.

Individual sessions cost $300 and include the assessment, the session and simple follow-up programming.

These 1-off sessions do not include complex in or off-season programming but are more geared towards helping athletes quickly problem solve injury or performance issues.

In-Person Movement Coaching

  • I offer in-person sessions in Edmonton Alberta, Canda. These sessions typically last between 60-90 minutes. In-person sessions differ from virtual coaching as we are able to adapt at a quicker pace. Virtual coaching often has a delay as athletes get their program, send back videos and then get coaching on their form. This is all done in-session when working in-person which allows us to be a little more efficient. In-person also allows for more hands on work when necessary.
